Stand Up Against Poverty

October 15 there is a global wise event happening that you can easily be involved in. Stand Up Against Poverty comes from the "Make Poverty History" campaign. I know that the web site talks about having big events...but I believe that small events or even just churches getting involved would have a profound effect on our world.

The basic idea is for one minute everyone stands while the following is read:

"Could I ask you all please to Stand Up Against Poverty.
( THEY STAND )
We stand here proudly as members of the generation that intends to defeat extreme poverty, the greatest challenge of our times.

We stand up now because we do not wish, years from now, to stand in front of the next generation and say ‘we knew that millions of people were dying unnecessarily every year - and we stood by, doing nothing.'

We cannot stay seated when a child born in a poor country today will die 30 years earlier than a
child born in a wealthy one. It’s is time to end all this heartbreak.

And we stand up because we are asking not for charity but justice – we know, that in our names,
world leaders have already made promises to bring this to an end – they are called the Millennium Development Goals.

What is needed is the political will to achieve and exceed these goals - So we, hundreds of
thousands of concerned individuals from over 100 countries, are on our feet to say -
To the leaders of the wealthy countries – be great - fight to keep your promises – debt
cancellation, more and better aid, and trade rules that help fight poverty – you know what needs to be done – do it.

We also stand before the leaders of poorer countries to say – be great – make it your first
responsibility to save the lives of your poorest citizens. We ask you to achieve real transparency
and accountability in how money is spent, to tackle inequality, to root out corruption. You know
what needs to be done. Do it.

Every generation has mighty battles to fight against evils such as slavery and apartheid which
seem as though they cannot be defeated. But history proves time and again they can, if enough
people stand up against injustice.

We wish to set a record today of the number of people standing up to demand action on poverty
– but the record we really want to break is the world’s record of breaking promises and just
ignoring the poor.

(Insert local message here)

We are six billion Voices. We want justice now. No more excuses. We will not stand for them."

Bring in the Air Conditioner

So here it is the last day of September and I've got Christmas on the mind. That's right, I've bypassed Thanksgiving, Halloween and our birthdays. Christmas ho (think "Land Ho!").

Okay, so maybe its because its time to bring in the air conditioner, close the cottage and think about turning on the heat. Or maybe its because we got the Christmas catalogue for World Vision yesterday. You can check it out yourself at http://www2.worldvision.ca/gifts/app?service=page/Home&mc=3213410 .

Its a Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood...Won't You Be My Neighbour A.K.A. Pit Bull Attack on the Way to Youth Group

Since some of our teens don't feel safe walking in their neighbourhood, we often will walk them over to the church for events and back again. Last friday as we were walking to an event, one of the boys was running behind us and came to a full stop flat on the ground beside us. This was wierd but even wierder was the pit bull that was on top of him! Thank Jesus himself the pit bull was muzzled and not aggressive (I kind of think he was playing although he did jump out of his backyard and chased him down!). The owners were right there to get him and other than a scrapped knee and a crazy story we made it over okay.

Scarily, the next night there were shots fired in the community. We were greeted with police lights flashing and two officers (one with a rifle in hand) as we tried to park our car.

Have I mentioned before how amazing our youth are and how much we love them?

"Don't fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God's wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It's wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life." (Philippians 4:6ish)

Ready to Play Ball...Chewie?

With vacation behind us and school underway, we are once again over-the-moon happy to be back on Queen Street West and at Toronto Alliance Church.

I've been trying to write more but the picture of Chewie & Wicket keeps distracting me.

Who doesn't love Chewie!?!
